x^4 + 4
= (x^4 + 4x^2 + 4) - 4x^2, by completing the square unorthodoxically
= (x^2 + 2)^2 - (2x)^2
= (x^2 + 2 + 2x)(x^2 + 2 - 2x), by difference of two squares
= (x^2 + 2x + 2)(x^2 - 2x + 2).
I hope this helps!
