Lonavala derived its name from the Sanskrit word ‘Lonavli’, which means ‘city surrounded by caves’. The region around Lonavala was once a popular Buddhist centre. The picturesque view of the Sahayadri range is one of the many highlights tat Lonavala has to offer. With its lush surroundings and peaceful environment, Lonavala is an ideal gateway from Mumbai’s concrete jungle and an ideal place for trekking. A leisurely walk along the waterfalls and other beautiful spots is what keeps most travellers busy in Lonavala. There are number of places around Lonavala to visit. The lakes around Lonavala worth visiting include Tungarli and Bhushi. Khandala, just five kilometres away, is another exciting hill resort that can be visited from Lonavala. GETTING THERE / HOW TO REACH

By road : Connected to all major cities in India. The hilly track of about 88 km from Kalka to Shimla is one of the finest in the country. Himachal Tourism Development Corporation also runs buses between Delhi and Shimla. Broad well surfaced road connects to kalka, Chandigarh, Delhi etc. Almost each and every part of the state is linked by roads. The Himachal Road Transport Corporation is running its buses covering the whole state. There is huge network of HRTC to cater the needs of the people.

By rail : Broad Gauge track upto Kalka connecting to Delhi, Kolkata and amritsar. Narrow gauge from Kalka to Shimla. Cover 96 km of zigzag route amidst picturesque mountainous landscape through 102 tunnels. Takes six hours.

By air : Daily flights from delhi and kullu. Airport at Jubbarhatti 23 km from the city. Taxi cabs are available.
