Thermal expansion is the alteration in the size of an object with the change in the temperature. Usually, when there is an increase in the temperature, the size of the object increases. The size of the object shrinks with a fall in the temperature. There are three factors on which the thermal expansion depends on. The factors are the objects original length, the temperature change and the thermal (heat) properties of the metal itself.
