We can express (x4 – 1) as
(a2-b2)= (a+b) (a-b)
where a = x2 and b = 1. So we have,
(x4 – 1) = ((x2)2– 12) = (x2 + 1)(x2 – 1)
The factor (x2 – 1) can be further factorised using the same Identity where a = x and b = 1.
(x4 – 1) = (x2 + 1)((x)2 –(1)2)
= (x2 + 1)(x + 1)(x – 1)
