a² - a² + 2ab - b²

= a² -(a² - 2ab + b²)

= (a)² - (a - b)²

=  [a + (a - b)][a - (a - b)]

= [2a - b][b]

I used the algebraic identities,

a² - 2ab + b² = (a - b)²     and

a² - b² = (a + b)(a - b)      here a = a    and

                                                  b = (a-b)
