(ax^2 + by^2 + 2axby) + ( bx^2 + ay^2 - 2bxay)
= ax^2 + by^2 + 2axby + bx^2 + ay^2 - 2bxay
= ax^2 + by^2 + bx^2 + ay^2 ( + 2axby and - 2bxay gets cancelled)
= ax^2 + bx^2 + ay^2 + by^2
= x^2( a + b) + y^2 ( a + b)
= (x^2 + y^2 ) + (a+b)
hope this helps.

tokaians: 2nd step comes from the formula of (a+b)^2 and (a-b) ^2
