Question :-

Factorise x² + 9x - 52 by splitting the middle term

Answer :-

(x + 13)(x - 4)

Solution :-

x² + 9x - 52

Splitting the middle term

First muptiply the first and last term

x² * - 52 = - 52x²

Find the factors of 52x² which sums to the middle term i.e 9x

13x * - 4x = - 52x²

Therfore the factors which sums to middle term i.e 9x are 13x and - 4x (13x - 4x = 9x)

Replace 9x with 13x - 4x

= x² + 13x - 4x - 52

= x(x + 13) - 4(x + 13)

= (x + 13)(x - 4)
