The solution is as below

 = > y \times y - 5y - 24 \\ = > {y}^{2} - 5y - 24 \\ = > {y}^{2} - 8y + 3y - 24 \\ = > y(y - 8) + 3(y - 8) \\ = > (y + 3)(y - 8) \\ = > so \\ = > y = \: 8 \: and \: - 3

In any equation ax^2+bx+c

try to split up b such that their product is the same as ac.

like if u split b as b1+b2 then b1*b2=ac

By hit and trial

- 5 = - 8 + 3

(-8)*(3)=-24

so

y^2 -5y-24

y^2-8y+3y-24

Take y common from first two terms and 3 common from the last two terms

y(y-8)+3(y-8)

take (y-8) common

u get

(y+3)(y-8)
