factorise the following x 2 - 6 X + 8

note here x2 means x ^2
x2-6x+8
x2-4x-2x+8
x (x-4) -2 (x -4)
(x-2) (x-4) = 0
therefore
x = 2 or x = 4.

2x-6x=-8
-4x=-8
subtraction will cancel out and then left behind
4x=8
x=8/4
by cutting
x=2
