5

x² + 2x - 35

⇒ You have to choose 2 numbers such that their product is -35 and their sum is 2

7 and -5 are such numbers

Now, substituting these in the above equation,

x² + 2x - 35

⇒ x² + 7x - 5x - 35

⇒ x (x + 7) - 5 (x + 7)

(x - 5) and (x + 7) are the factors of the given equation.

x - 5 = 0

⇒x = 5

or

x + 7 = 0

⇒x = -7

Therefore x = 5 or -7

Additional information:

  • Quadratic equations always has 2 roots means there are 2 values of x. They are of the form ax² + bx + c
  • Linear equations always has only 1 root. They are of the form ax + b
