Question:

How do I solve 4x^2+4x=3 using factoring?

Solution:

By splitting the middle term :-

4x² + 4x = 3

4x² + 4x - 3 = 0

It's a quadratic equation, in the form

ax² + bx + c = 0

Therefore, coefficients are –

a = 4, b = 4, c = -3

ac = 4×(-3) = -12, b = 4

So we need any two numbers, whose product is -12 & sum is 4

These two numbers are, 6 and -2

Now we can write,

4x² + 4x - 3 = 0

As,

4x² + 6x - 2x -3 = 0

2x(2x + 3) -1(2x+3) = 0 [taking common]

(2x+3) (2x-1) = 0 [2x + 3 is common taking aside]

2x + 3 = 0÷(2x - 1)

2x +3 =0

x = -3/2 ________(1)

Also,

2x - 1 = 0÷(2x + 3)

2x - 1 = 0

x = 1/2__________(2)

From equation (1) & (2),

The given equation has 2 solutions

x = -3/2 and 1/2
