We know that (a + b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab.

Given Equation is  (x + y)^2 - (x + y) - 20

                             = x^2 + y^2 + 2xy - (x + y)  -20

                             = x^2 + y^2 + 2xy - x - y - 20.

Hope this helps!

hiii,

(x + y)^2 - (x + y) -20
let (x - y) be d
d^2 - d - 20
=d^2 -(5 -4)d - 20
=d^2 - 5d + 4d - 20
=d(d - 5) - 4(d - 5)
=(d - 5) (d - 4)

hope helps

loganathan2: thanks a lot
