☜☆☞ Timely irrigation is critical for Indian agriculture. We are yet to have a comprehensive national water policy. Indian agriculture still dependent on monsoon. The impact of climate change has already shown its impact on monsoon. Hence agriculture in rain fed areas, drought prone areas, desert and high hill regions with scanty rains require irrigation. Over the last one decade monsoon has been affected due to climate change factors. The cropping intensity, ground water has been depleting and untimely rain has led to flood. Gravity led irrigation system such as major, medium and minor irrigation has problem with tail end issues.

During sowing and plant growth stages there is need of critical and time irrigation based on crop water requirements. Despite best efforts micro irrigation has covered more than 9 mha so far in the country. Thus irrigation needs closer attention looking at population growth, reduction of avg. operational land holding, cropping intensity, availability of fresh water for irrigation etc. Recently govt. upscale national mission on sustainable agriculture as the Prime Minister Krishi Sinchayee Yoajana. It has the mandate for irrigation for sustainable agriculture, extending micro irrigation to drought & rain-fed regions, desert & cold arid zones and also irrigation in hilly regions of the country.
