Fair fair I felt anger rise inside me. Fair as if that was all that mattered, mattered most, more than a good figure, a chiselled face, more than beauty that lies within. I knew i wasnt as beautiful as she was with her fine, regular reatures, and i wasnt even half as talented as her. How did it matter if she was darker than me?

is an extract from the story “I Must Know the Truth”. Aradhana and Simmi are sisters but Aradhana
has complex that she is dark. She had
beautiful structure which she was unwilling to accept. On the day of her inaugural dance of Kamala
Devi School of Dance, she comes to know that she is an adopted daughter. Her mother convinces her that the love
showered by her family that is, mother, father and Simmi are real. Aradhana had decided not to dance but her
mother’s love induces her to perform and that day, she performs only for her
mother.
