5 Important Composers of the Medieval Period

Explanation:

1. Stephen of Liege (850-920)

Stephen of Liege was active in the early Late Middle Ages, lasting 500-1150 AD.  However, as we learn more about history, the  names of individual composers appear less frequently, making Liège  one of the first composers known to us.This is largely due to the fact that music was transmitted "by ear" from person to person until the 9th century, when primitive musical notation was developed.

2. Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179)

A charming figure, Hildegard of Bingen was a German convent (head of a convent group), writer, philosopher, poet and composer.  She experienced religious fantasies from an early age, and her Christian mysticism deeply influenced her work.

3. Fulbert of Chartres (c. 952-1028)

The exact details of Fulbert's origins remain  a mystery, but he was born  in northern France or possibly Italy in the late 10th century before becoming a bishop of Chartres and a teacher at a cathedral school.

4. Peter Abelard (1079-1142)

Abelard is best known as a theologian and scholar. The French were one of the most important and controversial figures in the Western Church of the day. But he was also a composer, composing monophonic hymns and biblical planktus.

5. Leonin (c. 1155-1201)

The French composer Leonin was active in the Middle Ages (1150-1300) and was a pioneer of the polyphonic organ. Organum - when an ordinary human's basic melody  is usually accompanied by  additional voices at regular intervals - evolved in the 9th century, an early form of counterpoint (relationships between simultaneous and interdependent musical lines) and harmony as created the beginning of We know it today.
