Resistance connected in parallel (fig.1)
1/Rp= 1/R1+1/R2
= (1/5+1/5)ohm
=2/5 ohm
Rp =5/2ohm
Rp= 2.5 ohm
Resistance connected in series (fig.2)
Rs = Rp+ R3
=(2.5 +5)ohm
=7.5 ohm
so total resistance is 7.5ohm
