Let the present age of the father and son be x and y years respectively.

Given :-

Father is 3 times old as his son.

⇒ x = 3y  .......... (1)

After 12 years the age of father and son will be (x + 12) and (y + 12) years respectively.

As after 12 years the age of father is twice the age of son

∴ x + 12 = 2(y + 12)  ............(2)

Putting x = 3y in equation (2) we get

3y + 12 = 2y + 24

⇒ 3y – 2y = 24 – 12

⇒ y = 12

Putting the value of y in equation (1) we get

x = 3 × 12 = 36

∴ The present age of father and son are 36 and 12 years and the sum of their present age is (36 + 12) years = 48 years

Hope it helps
