There is a process called osmosis which states water molecules always travel from a dilute to a concentrated solution. Now, when we add excessive fertilizers in the soil, the area becomes highly concentrated as compared to the region in the roots. Hence water molecules from the roots move towards the highly concentrated area. Hence there is not much water left in the roots which can move upwards and be utilised by the plants. Thus, due to lack of water plants may die.
