Figure shows a pipe with one end wider than the other. It is filled with oil. Metal cylinder A and B are fitted closely into the ends of the pipe so that they can be pushed in and out, but the oil cannot

escape. If cylinder A is pushed into the pipe by a force of 100N,

a) What pressure is applied to the oil?

b) What force is exerted on cylinder B?

Answer:

pressure is applied to the oil is :2,500 N/m2

Force exerted on Cylinder B is :2000 N

Explanation:

Please attach the figure so that we can answer accurately.

Figure which i have considered is given in attachment:

According to figure :

A2= 400cm²=400 /100x100=0.04m²

A1=80cm²=0.8 m²

Given that F2= Force applied on second piston is 100N

According to Pascals principe , when a fluid is enclosed in a closed container and external pressure is applied the pressure gets transmitted through out the fluid undiminished .

a)What pressure is applied to the oil?

So P2= F2/A2

P2=100N/0.04= 100x100/2

=2,500 N/m2 or pascals

b) Force exerted on cylinder B =?

According to Pascals law :

P1=P2

F2/A2=F1/A1

F1= A1x F2/A2

=0.8x100/0.04

=2000 N
