Multipurpose projects have been criticized due to the large-scale displacement of local communities and ecological problems by the environmentalists

Explanation:

  • Multipurpose projects  have been under scrutiny and opposed for several reasons in recent years. The management and damming of waterways impact their natural flow creating lower sedimentary deposits at the reservoir bottom, leading to poorer habitats and rockier stream beds for the aquatic life in the rivers.
  • Projects involving construction of large dams also make it hard for aquatic animals, to migrate, particularly for spawning. The reservoirs that are in the floodplains often submerge the prevailing vegetation and soil, which contribute to its degradation/decomposition over time.
  • The displacement of local communities on a large-scale created resistance to multipurpose projects. Locals also had to give up their livelihood,  land  and their meager access and control over natural resources for the common benefit of the nation,
  • Many objections emerged because the projects did not meet the goals they were intended for. Ironically, the dams which were built to prevent floods induced flooding in the river as a result of sedimentation. Moreover, the major dams largely struggled to control flooding when rainfall became excessive..
  • Not only did the floods devastate life and property, they have caused significant soil erosion. Sedimentation has resulted in a lack of silt, a natural fertilizer, in the flood plains contributing more to the problem of land degradation. The multi-purpose also triggered earthquakes, pollution and pest problems, and caused waterborne diseases, becasue of excessive utilisation of water .
