a=2+root 3...(1)

1/a=1/(2+root 3)=rationalising the denominator by multiplying numerator and denominator by-

(2-root 3)

1/a=(2-root 3)/(2^2-root 3^2)

1/a=2-root 3......(2)

Adding (1) and (2),

a+1/a=4
