The value of "a" is 10

Solution:

The mean is given as:

Mean = \frac{ mark \times \text{ number of students }} { \text{ total number of students }}

From given table,

Total number of students = a + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = a + 10

Given that, mean mark is 1

Therefore,

1 = \frac{ 0 \times a + 1 \times 4 + 2 \times 3 + 3 \times 2 + 4 \times 1 }{ a + 10 }\\\\ 1 = \frac{4 + 6 + 6 + 4}{a + 10}\\\\1 = \frac{ 20 }{ a + 10}\\\\a + 10 = 20\\\\a = 20 - 10\\\\a = 10

Thus the value of "a" is 10
