Step-by-step explanation:

Given :-

A number which is equal to its cube but not equal to its square .

To find :-

Find the number ?

Solution :-

Let the number be X

The cube of the number = X³

According to the given problem

The number is equal to its cube

=> X = X³

=> X³-X = 0

=> X(X²-1) = 0

=> X = 0 or X²-1 = 0

=> X = 0 or X² = 1

=> X = 0 or X = ±√1

=> X = 0 or X = 1 or -1

I)

If X = 0 then X² = 0² = 0 and X³ = 0³ = 0

According to the given problem

The number is not equal to zero

X ≠ 0

II)

If X = 1 then X² = 1² = 1 and X³ = 1³ = 1

According to the given problem

The number is not equal to 1

X ≠ 1

III)

If X = -1 then X² = (-1)² = 1 and X³ = (-1)³ = -1

According to the given problem

The number is equal to -1

X = -1

Therefore, X = -1

Answer:-

The required number for the given problem is -1

Check:-

The number = -1

The square of -1 = (-1)² = 1

=> -1≠1

The number ≠ The square of the number

The cube of -1 = (-1)³ = -1

=> -1 = -1

=> The number = The cube of the number

Verified the given relations in the given problem.
