36 = 1/2 * BC * 6
36 * 2 / 6 = BC
6 * 2 = BC
12cm = BC

because
area of rectangle =
$\frac{1}{2} \times base \times height$
that is
$\frac{1}{2 } \times bc \times 6 = 36$
$bc = \frac{36}{6} \times 2$
$bc = 6 \times 2$
