Question:

A body starts from O and goes towards Point A and from Point A it moves  towards point B and from Point B it moves to Point C .It is given OA = 3km and AB = 4km an BC = 5km .Find the Distance and Displacement Covered by the body.

Distance:

  • Distance is total distance followed by an object or the body.

  • It depends on the path followed by the object or the body.

  • It is a scalar quantity .

  • It is independent of initial and finals points of the path travelled by the body .

Displacement:

  • Shortest distance between initial and final points.

  • It is independent of path followed.

  • It depends on initial and final points of the path followed.

  • It is a vector quantity.

Given:

A body starts from O and goes towards Point A and from Point A it moves towards point B and from Point B it moves to Point C .

OA = 3km

AB = 4km

BC = 5km

To Find:

The Distance and Displacement covered by the body

Solution:

Distance :

Distance Covered by the Body = OA + AB + AC

3+4+5\\\\7+5\\\\=12km

Displacement :

From O TO B

\sqrt{(3+4)^2} \\\\\\\sqrt{9+16} \\\\\\\sqrt{25} \\\\\\=5 units

From A to C

\sqrt{(4+5)^20}\\\\\\\sqrt{16+25}\\\\\\\sqrt{41}   units

Answer:

Total Distance covered by the body = 12km, Displacement covered by the body from O to B = 5units and A to C = √41 units
