According to Hooke's Law the restoring force of an ideal spring is proportional to its elongation x: F = k·x where x = l – l0 , l is the actual length of the spring, l0 is its length in relaxed state; k is the spring constant (or stiffness; dimension: = ). For an ideal spring there is no force when l = l0.
