Given:

A series of numbers 3, 8, 27, __, 987.

To Find:

The missing number in the series is?

Solution:

The given problem can be solved by developing a common logic between every term.

1. The given series is 3, 8, 27, __, 987.

2. The second term in the series is obtained as,

=> Second term  = 3 x 2 + 2 = 8,

4. The third term of the series is obtained as,

=>Third term  = 8 x 3 + 3 = 27,

5. The fourth term of the series can be obtained using the same logic,

=>Fourth term = Missing number = 27 x 5 + 5= 140.

6. Verify the logic for the fifth term,

=> Fifth term = 140 x 7 + 7 = 987. ( 2, 3, 5, and 7 are prime numbers ).

7. Hence the missing number is 140 and it satisfies the logic used for every term.

Therefore, the missing number in the series is 987.
