Hi ,
Let x and y are two numbers,
xy = -96 ----( 1 )
x + y = 10
y = 10 - x ----( 2 )
Put ( 2 ) in equation ( 1 ), we get
x ( 10 - x ) = -96
10x - x² = -96
0 = x² -10x -96
x² -10x -96 = 0
x² - 16x + 6x -96 = 0
x( x - 16 ) + 6 ( x - 16 ) = 0
( x - 16 )( x + 6 ) = 0
x - 16 = 0 or x + 6 = 0
x = 16 or x = -6
Put x value in equation ( 2 ) we get,
y = 10 - 16 or y = 10 - ( - 6 )
y = -6 or y = 16
( x , y ) = ( 16 , -6 )
or
( x , y ) = ( -6 , 16 )
I hope this helps you.
