Transpiration is the movement of water from roots to other plant parts, and facilitates the transport of minerals, soil applied systemic pesticides and other substances.
Water usage/loss due to transpiration is an inevitable component of plant growth, not only due to the need to transport minerals, but also due to stomatal opening (which is needed for carbon dioxide uptake and photosynthesis). Plants that survive in deserts through restriction of respiration therefore have restricted growth rates (compared to “mesophilic” plants growing in areas with abundant moisture).
