Total resistance can be calculated by first calculating the equivalent resistance which are in parallel

 \frac{1}{R_{parallel}=\frac{1}{8}+\frac{1}{8}=\frac{2}{8}=\frac{1}{4}

 R_{parallel}=4ohm

 R_{series}=4+4=8ohms

Current flowing through R1 is 1 A
