In case of Al2(SO4)3:
Consider just the sulfate ion: SO4^2-
Oxidation # of S + 4( oxidation number of O) = -2
Oxidation # of S + 4(-2) = -2
Oxidation # of S = +6
If you wanted to do the same thing for Al2(SO4)3:
2(ox # Al) + 3(ox # S) + 12(ox # O) = 0
2(+3) + 3(S) + 12(-2) = 0
3S = +18
S = +6
In case of Na2S2O3:
+1 for Na = 2x+1 = +2
-2 for O = 3x-2= -6
We know Total cargo stable molecule (non-charged) = 0
+2 -6 + 2S =0
2S = +4
S=+2
