Concept:

Image from mirror 1 will become object for mirror 2 and the direction of incident light will be positive.

Given:

Focal length of mirror 1 is 20 cm

Focal length of mirror 2 is 10 cm

Object is at 30 cm from mirror 1

Distance between mirror 1 and mirror 2 is 45 cm

Mirror 1 is concave mirror

Mirror 2 is convex mirror

Find:

Position of final image.

Solution:

Assuming the direction of incident light to be positive.

For first reflection from mirror 1

Applying mirror formula

u1 = -30 cm

f1 = -20 cm

1/f1 = 1/u1 + 1/v1

1/v1 = 1/f1 - 1/u1

1/v1 = 1/-20 - 1/-30

1/v1 = 1/-60

v1 = -60 cm

Image will form at 60 cm left to mirror 1 and at 15 cm left to mirror 2

Image from mirror 1 will now act as object for mirror 2

For second reflection from mirror 2

u2 = +15 cm

f2 = +10 cm

Applying mirror formula

1/f2 = 1/u2 + 1/v2

1/v2 = 1/f2 - 1/u2

1/v2 = 1/10 - 1/15

1/v2 = 1/30

v2 = + 30 cm

Hence, the image will form at 30 cm left to mirror 2.
