It depends on what type of society you belongs to. The most respectable profession in India is Civil services. Its like all your sins are forgotten and you are like “See him son, be like him “ in the society.

Some of the professions one should focus as a respectable job here :

Civil Service : As discussed IAS, IPS, IRS and other UPSC officers posts are the topmost target of any parent here. If your neighbour or any distant cousin qualifies civil services, believe me you are going to get a “see him, he made his parent proud” type look.

Defence: If you are air force officer, especially pilot, you are apple of girls’ eyes. Defence officers are always fantasized by Indian girls because of the status they earn. Its not the money but no one can explain “why him, why not me” :) . Its again parents are very proud of their defence officer kids plus a loads of respect from society.

Doctor : Aah, a long tradition of parents dreaming their kids to become doctor someday. Doctors earn a lot of respect in society. And those residing in rural India, they are worshipped like gods. Its somewhat same in urban part, but rural people are more affectionate to their doctors. Being a doctor is one of the most difficult task maybe at par with civil services.

Any Government Babu : If you are a government employee, there are more chances of fathers opting you for their princesses rather than private sector employees. Its strong belief that government employee with 20K salary will have more secured life than one earning 30–40K in private sector. get ready for govt. jobs :)

Engineer : The evergreen choice of parents to opt this career for their kids. If you are an engineer you’ll be at par with a govt job. However the trend is declining, its still have a stronghold in our society. Only we guys know what hell is a engineer’s life is :(
