Given :

  • R₁ = 5 ohm
  • R₂ = 10 ohm

To find :

  • Rₛ
  • Rₚ

Formula used :

\sf \bullet \:  R_s \:  = \:  R_1  \: + \:  R_2 \\  \\ \sf \bullet   \: \dfrac{1}{R_p} =  \dfrac{1}{R_1} +  \dfrac{1}{R_2}

Solution :

Part 1) Rₛ ( series combination )

➝ Rₛ = 10ohm + 5ohm

➝ Rₛ = 15 ohm

Part 2) Rₚ ( parallel combination )

\sf \implies \: \dfrac{1}{R_p}  \: = \:  \dfrac{1}{10 }   +  \dfrac{1}{5}  \\  \\ \sf \implies \: \dfrac{1}{R_p} =  \dfrac{(1 \times 1) + (2 \times 1)}{10}  \\  \\ \sf \implies \: \dfrac{1}{R_p}  \: =  \:  \dfrac{1 + 2}{10}  \\  \\ \sf \implies \: \dfrac{1}{R_p} =  \dfrac{3}{10}  \\  \\ \sf \implies \: R_p \: =  \bold{ \dfrac{10}{3} \: ohm \: = 3.33 ohm }

ANSWER :

  • Rₛ = 15 ohm
  • Rₚ = 3.33 ohm

Additional information :

  • Rₛ , Resistance in series combination is always larger than the individual resistance
  • Rₚ , Resistance in parallel combination is always less than the individual resistance
