Here a = -12 , d= 7 [-5- (-12)]

tn = a + (n-1)d

t40 = -12 +(40-1) 7

t40= -12 + 39*7

t40 = -12 + 276

t40 = 261

Thus, the 40th term of the A. P. is 261 .
