Find the area enclosed by each of the following figures in which each pair of consecutive sides are at right angles .​

i) Let us name all the sides ..

Construction : Join D and C

Solution :

Rectangle ABCD :-

AB (l) = 8cm

BC (b) = 4cm

Area of rectangle ABCD = l × b

= 8 × 4

= 32cm^2

Rectangle DEFG :-

DE (l) = 7 + 4

= 11cm

EF (b) = 4cm

Area of rectangle DEFG = l × b

= 11 × 4

= 44cm^2

Total area of the figure = Area of rectangle ABCD + Area of rectangle DEFG

= 32 + 44

= 76cm^2

ii) Let us name all the sides ..

Construction : Join P and S

Join Q and R

Solution :

Solution : Rectangle ABCD :-

AD (l) = 12cm

AB (b) = 3cm

Area of rectangle ABCD = l × b

= 12 × 3

= 36cm^2

Area of rectangle ABCD = Area of rectangle EFGH = 36cm^2 ( As they have same length and breadth )

Rectangle PQRS :-

PQ (l) = 5cm

PS (b) = 4cm

Area of rectangle PQRS = l × b

= 5 × 4

= 20cm^2

Total area of the figure = Area of rectangle ABCD + Area of rectangle EFGH + Area of rectangle PQRS

= 36 + 36 + 20

= 92cm^2
