Given:

  • Hypotenuse = 41 cm
  • One side of triangle = 40 cm

To find:

Area of triangle = ?

Solution:

(Refer to the given figure)

For finding the area of the triangle we need to know its base and height.

Since the given triangle is a right-angle triangle let's find the two sides excluding the hypotenuse.

By Pythagoras theorem,

AB² + BC² = AC²

⇒ AB² + 40² = 41²

⇒ AB² + 1600 = 1681

⇒ AB² = 1681 - 1680

⇒ AB² = 81

⇒ AB = √81

⇒ AB = ± 9

AB = 9 cm

For finding the area of triangle,

Area of triangle = ½ (Base × Height)

⇒ Area of triangle = ½ (BC × AB)

⇒ Area of triangle = ½ (40 × 9)

⇒ Area of triangle = ½ (360)

Area of triangle = 180 cm²

∴ Area of triangle = 180 cm²
