Area of triangle ABC=1/2*BC*AD

=1/2a×√3a/2=√3a^2/4

therefore area of equilateral triangle is

(3a^2)/4

So back to your question,

area will be (√3*12*12)/4

=36√3 cm2 ans

putting value of √3as 1.732

ans will be

62.353 cm2
