Therefore, radius of 1 circle;

28 \div 2 \times 2 = 7cm

Area of shaded region = area of square - ate of 4 cicles

=( side \times side) -( \pi \: r {}^{2}   \times 4) \\   = (28 \times 28) - (\pi  \times 7 \times 7 \times 4 ) \\  = 784 - (\pi \:  \times 196)  \\ = 784 - (22 \div 7 \times 196) \\  = 784  - (4312  \div 7) \\   = 784 - 616 \\  = 68cm {}^{2}

Therefore,

area of the shaded portion is 68 sq. cm
