Side of whole figure = 2+2+2+2 = 8

Side of shaded portion = 2+2 = 4

Area of whole square = side²

= 8² = 64cm²

Area of shaded portion = side²

= 4² = 16cm²

Area of unshaded portion = Area of whole figure - Area of shaded portion

= 64 - 16

= 48cm²
