We have to find the coordinates of the point of trisection of the line segment joining the point A(2, -2) and B(-7, 4).

solution : A(2, -2) ------- C--------D---------B(-7, 4)

C divides the line AB into 1 : 2 ratio.

from section formula,

C = [(1 × -7 + 2 × 2)/(1 + 2), (1 × 4 + 2 × -2)/(1 + 2)]

= [(-7 + 4)/3 , (4 - 4)/3 ]

= (-1, 0)

D divides the line AB into 2 : 1 ratio.

from section formula,

D = [(2 × -7 + 1 × 2)/(2 + 1), (2 × 4 + 1 × -2)/(2 + 1)]

= [(-14 + 2)/3 , (8 - 2)/3]

= (-4, 2)

Therefore (-1,0) and (-4,2) are the points of trisection of the line segment joining the points A and B.
