Given : points (-4,0) and (0,6)

To Find :  coordinates of the point which divide the line segment joining the points (-4,0) and (0,6) in three equal parts

Solution:

A (-4,0)      B(a , b)        C ( c , d)      D (0,6)

AB = BC = CD  = AD/3

AB : BD = 1  : 2

AC : CD = 2 : 1

B divides A & D in 1 : 2 Ratio

a = (1 * 0 + 2(-4))/(1 + 2)  = -8/3

b = (1 * 6 + 2(0))/(1 + 2)  =  2

C divides A & D in 2 : 1 Ratio

a = (2 * 0 + 1(-4))/(1 + 2)  = -4/3

b = (2 * 6 + 1(0))/(1 + 2)  =  4

(-8/3 , 2)  and (-4/3 , 4)  are the points which divide the line segment joining the points (-4,0) and (0,6) in three equal parts
