(7, 3) would be the point that divides this line in the ratio of 3:1.

explanation:

since question said the line has to be divided in 3:1 ratio, the line technically has to be divided in 4 parts. (3+1).

8 (x2) -   4 (x1)  = 4

5 (y2)   - (-3)  (y1)    = 8

4/4= 1

8/4 = 2

since the first part has to be 3/4th of the line (1*3) is 3 and 2*3 is 6

so x is increases by 3 and y is increased by 6.
