Given :- Find the discriminant of the following equation: निम्नलिखित समीकरण के डिस्क्रिमिनेंट का पता लगाएं : 2x² + x - 4 = 0 ?

Solution :-

we know that, If A•x² + B•x + C = 0 ,is any quadratic equation, then its discriminant is given by :-

  • D = B² - 4•A•C
  • If D = 0 , then the given quadratic equation has real and equal roots.
  • If D > 0 , then the given quadratic equation has real and distinct roots.
  • If D < 0 , then the given quadratic equation has unreal (imaginary) roots..

comparing the given quadratic equation 2x² + x - 4 = 0 with A•x² + B•x + C = 0, we get,

  • A = 2
  • B = 1
  • C = (-4) .

So,

discriminant(D) = B² - 4•A•C

→ D = (1)² - 4 * 2 * (-4)

→ D = 1 - 8(-4)

→ D = 1 - (-32)

→ D = 1 + 32

→ D = 33 (Ans.)

also,

→ 33 > 0,

→ D > 0.

given quadratic equation has real and distinct roots.

Hence, value of discriminant of the following equation is 33.
