Let the total capacitance of the infinite ladder be C.

Let the total capacitance of the ladder after the first 1uF capacitor and the first 2 uF capacitor be equal to that of a single capacitor c .

Join c to the first 2 capacitors and remove the rest of the infinite ladder.

Since it's an infinite ladder C is approximately equal to c.

C is in series with 2uF capacitor and together they're in parallel with the 1 uF capacitor.

1/Cs = 1/C + 1/2

Cs = 2C/(2+C)

C = Cs + 1

C = 2C/(2+C) + 1

C = - 1 or 2

Since capacitance can't be negative C = 2uF.
