the method we use to calculate equivalent resistance is different for each type of circuit for a series circuit we simply add up the resistance for each component however in a parallel circuit the reciprocal of the total resistance is equal to the some of the reciprocal of the resistance of each branch

equalvalent resistance = sum of resistance in series connection

which means

equalvalent resistance= 2 ohm + 1 ohm

=3 ohm

now new connection is formed

which is in parallel connection

therefore

1 / equalvalent resistance = 1 / 3 ohm + 1 / 1.5 ohm

removing point

=1 / 3 ohm + 10 / 15
