Let the numerator be x-4
Let the denominator be x
If 1 is subtracted from the numerator(i.e. x-4)the numerator becomes x-5
And when 3 is added to the denominator, it becomes x+3
So, x-5 1
----- = -
x+3. 5
By cross multiplication,
5(x-5)=1(x+3)
5x-25=x+3
5x-x=3+25
4x=28
x=28
----
4
Hence, x=7
