Find the greatest number which divides 290 and 538 leaving remainders 3 and 5 respectively.

On dividing 290, the remainder is 5, this means the number divides 290-5=287 exactly.

Similarly, on dividing 538, the remainder is 6, meaning the number divides 538-3=533 exactly

So the number divided both 290 and 538 exacly

 Factors of 290 are 1*7*41

Factors of 533 are 1*13*41

 So the greatest common factor is 1*41.

 Hence the greatest number of such sort is 41.
