Remove the remainder from both numbers.

135-3=132,159-3=156.

Now take the factors

132=2*2*3*11

156=2*2*3*13

Therefore, the largest no. that divides 135 and 159 leaving remainder 3 is 2*2*3=12

135 - 3 = 132

159 - 3 = 156

Now find the Greatest common factor of 132 and 156

FIND GCF OF 132 AND 156

The factors of 132 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 12, 22, 33, 44, 66, 132

The factors of 156 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 13, 26, 39, 52, 78, 156

Then the greatest common factor is 12

Thus the largest number which divides 135 and 159 leaving remainder 3 in each case is 12
