(Take a look on the figure I have drawn which will help you to understand).

The length of hypotenuse can be find by Pythagoras Theorem,

AC^2 = AB^2 + BC^2

= 16^2 + 12^2

= 256 + 144

= 400

AC = 400

AC = 20 units

Hence, Hypotanuse AC is 20 units.
